Antonomasia

Antonomasia refers to the linguistic process in which a proper name is used instead of a generic term for a thing or service. In trademark law, this becomes relevant when a brand name becomes the representative term for an entire product category. Such generic usage can significantly impair the mark’s distinctiveness and thereby jeopardize its legal protection.
